Everyone in the town joins the festival!
In mid-September, the "Mt. Akan Shrine Festival," one of the most exciting festivals in the Lake Akan Onsen area throughout the year, is held on a grand scale!
Mt. Akan Shrine was founded in 1905, and residents and visitors to the Lake Akan Onsen area have received blessings for more than 100 years, including domestic and travel safety, town peace and prosperity.
The festival is held for two days, and in addition to the main event of carrying the portable shrine, there is also a fireworks display and a traditional Lake Akan event "Sumo Tournament," in which all the residents of the town mobilize to enjoy themselves to the fullest!
Push the portable shrine up high!
The population of the Lake Akan area is less than 1,000, but the festival is truly an exciting festival. There are different kinds of people living here, the local residents, Ainu people, and foreign staff working at the hotel, joining together and having great fun.
On the second day, the portable shrine is carried, and the participants walk around the hot spring resort. Many young people gather and everyone just tries their very best to push the shrine up higher!
Another amazing point is that the portable shrine and drums will be carried on a motor boat and cruise around Lake Akan! The strong sounds of the drums and the shouts of "wasshoi, wasshoi" are so powerful that you can't help but feel excited!
If you want to see the most exciting festival in Lake Akan Onsen, be sure to visit in mid-September! This is also the season when you can enjoy many of the outdoor activities we have previously introduced, so if you would like more information, please check out our past articles!
